About the White-Robed Monks of St. Benedict in South Africa

PEACE

If you’ve never heard about the White-Robed Monks of St Benedict (WRMOSB) or the Contemporary Catholic Community before, here’s the first thing we want you to know about us: we are here for you, and we offer the sacraments to all without question or judgment.

The mission of the White Robed Monks of St. Benedict is to engender an atmosphere for healing the human experience wherein each person may realize his or her wholeness and holiness.

To accomplish this, the monks offer the sacraments in general and specifically baptism and Catholic marriage ceremonies for the contemporary Catholic, the divorced Catholic, or the Catholic with special circumstances; incardination for Catholic clerics without a bishop; and monastic affiliation and network affiliation. The monks also provide various educational materials for those wishing to actively make the world a more compassionate place by opening the possibility for them to be more compassionate.

As the presence of the White-Robed Monks of St. Benedict in South Africa (WRMOSBSA), we at the Contemporary Catholic Community strive to make the world a more compassionate place through our ministry of the Word and Sacraments. A self-governing Contemporary Catholic community in the tradition of the Old (Dutch) Catholic Church, we have a mission of service to all. The White-Robed Monks are neither Roman nor Orthodox, Liberal nor Old Catholic. The White-Robed Monks of St. Benedict are just CATHOLIC.

We appreciate that Jesus never said “No” to anyone. Therefore, in the traditional spirit of Benedictine hospitality, we welcome all who are searching for a spiritual home and offer without question or judgment the Word and Sacraments to anyone who requests them.

Bound together by Christ’s love, we support one another by emphasizing the positive aspects of the faith, approaching one another in openness on our journey of faith, realizing we are at different points along the route, and believing those things that the Christian community has always held and believed as enunciated in the Apostle and Nicene Creeds.

We are Catholic in the truest sense of the word and share our history with other Catholic jurisdictions. You, like many before you, are probably surprised to learn that there are “other” Catholic jurisdictions. Catholicism provides a quick overview of 2,000 years of Catholic development and links to a more detailed history.

Because of our nonjudgmental approach, Catholics in the Roman jurisdiction and others seeking outdoor weddings or having prior marriages often approach us to officiate at their weddings.

In addition to weddings, we celebrate all the sacraments, offer home Masses, and provide funeral services. We welcome anyone looking for a smaller community in which to practice their faith to join our community for the celebration of Holy Mass or any of the Sacraments at one of our chapels.

Our mission is to make the world a more compassionate place through a truly welcoming and dynamic Catholic community where people can connect through the Word and Sacraments with God, with others, and with opportunities to make a difference in our lives.

You can think of the Contemporary Catholic Community and the WRMOSB Network as a group of people “doing life together.” We are a faith community on a journey, people with a shared mission—and we hope that your life will be enriched through your involvement so that together we can bring hope and healing to our world in these exciting times.

If you are intrigued by our approach to Catholicism, we invite you to contact us for more information for a deeper look into our faith life.

Peace and Joy!

Abbot-Bishop Oliver, OSB

About the Chapel of St. Patrick

Welcome

Welcome to the Chapel of St. Patrick. We are a home and shelter for spiritual seekers, the so-called "skeptics," the "faithful," the curious, and all who long for a deeper sense of belonging. Step inside, find your seat, and know that you are loved, seen, and received just as you are.

The Chapel of St. Patrick is a welcoming, inclusive, and contemplative chapel within the White Robed Monks of St. Benedict in South Africa—a self-governing Contemporary Catholic community in the tradition of the Old (Dutch) Catholic Church. Our small chapel, dedicated to the legacy of St. Patrick of Ireland, is meant to be a small oasis where stillness, compassion, and sacramental grace can meet and refresh us.

Visit our chapel if you long for a place where ancient faith and living spirit come together. Here the peace of Christ, the wisdom of Patrick, and the stillness of Benedict invite you into a deeper way of being.

The chapel’s identity is grounded in:

Benedictine Contemplation & Spirituality

“Listen with the ear of the heart” (from the Rule of St. Benedict). We cultivate silence, prayer, stability, and gentle hospitality. We are inspired by his spirituality, which can be described as follows: St. Benedict’s spirituality is built on balance—an ordered, peaceful way of life that unites prayer, work, and community into a single path to God.

Rooted in humility and obedience to Christ, St. Benedict of Nursia teaches that holiness grows through stability, daily faithfulness, and the sanctification of ordinary tasks.

His Rule forms a spirituality of listening—attentiveness to Scripture, to the movements of the heart, and to the presence of Christ in every person. It is a way marked by simplicity, hospitality, rhythm, and inner peace, inviting believers to seek God “in all things” and to prefer nothing to the love of Christ.

Celtic Strength & Simplicity; Inspired by the Life of St. Patrick

Inspired by St. Patrick’s life of courage, forgiveness, and deep engagement with nature and everyday life, we are also inspired by his legacy and spirituality.

St. Patrick’s spirituality blends deep humility, unceasing prayer, and a profound sense of God’s nearness in all things. Formed by hardship and solitude, he discovered a contemplative, Trinitarian faith that flowed naturally into compassion, mission, and justice.

His way mirrors early Celtic Christianity’s reverence for creation and the Benedictine rhythm of prayer, simplicity, and service. Patrick saw every person, slave or king, "pagan" or believer, as bearing the image of Christ.

This reflects the Celtic belief that each soul is a “little Christ” and the Benedictine insistence that Christ is encountered in community, in the outsider, and in the stranger. For Patrick, to follow Christ was to be transformed inwardly and then to carry that love outward, to every person, especially the forgotten and the wounded.

Independent Catholic Tradition/Independent Sacramental Movement

We celebrate the sacraments with pastoral freedom, compassion, inclusivity, and rooted in apostolic tradition but open to all who seek God’s grace.

A Healing Presence

Especially for those who have been wounded or excluded by institutional churches, here grace is offered freely, generously, and without condition. We seek to be a small, steady light of Christ’s peace—a place where the brokenhearted find rest, the curious find welcome, and the faithful find nourishment.

All Are Welcome

This chapel exists for the faithful, the curious, the wounded, the hopeful, and the uncertain.

  • You do not need to have everything together.
  • You do not need to fit a category.
  • You do not need to prove yourself worthy.

Welcome. No matter your story, your background, or your journey of faith, this chapel is a sanctuary for you. Here we honour mystery, celebrate diversity, and hold space for healing and hope.

Why You Should Join Our Community

At the Chapel of St. Patrick, you are welcomed without conditions and embraced without judgement. Here, you will find a quiet place to heal, a community that listens, and a spirituality that honours both ancient tradition and the sacredness of your everyday life.
Come and discover a space where you can belong, breathe, and begin again.

Peace and Joy

Community Outreach; Listening Hearts

Food Programmes

Every month at the Annie Burger Retirement Village, our Chapel supports the Listening Hearts, which is a registered non-profit company (NPC) and a public benefit organisation (PBO) to serve hot vegetable soup, fresh fruit, and care packages to residents who rely on limited social grants. Listening Hearts is an initiative of the White Robed Monks of St. Benedict South Africa, who launched it in 2024.

Beyond nourishment, our Chapel joins our wider community in sharing, supporting and conversation to counter isolation, whenever and wherever we encounter it.

We also assist in running Community Outreach in vulnerable neighbourhoods, using each meal as an opportunity to build trust, share resources, and foster mutual care.

Companionship

Loneliness can be as painful as any illness. Members of our Chapel aims to visit isolated seniors and individuals without close family, offering friendly conversation, a listening ear, and small gestures of care. By forging genuine connections- whether through home visits, phone check-ins, or community outings- we restore a sense of belonging and brighten the day of those who need it most.

LGBTQIA+ Support

As part of the Listening Hearts initiative, we assist in providing a safe, affirming space for LGBTQIA+ individuals facing discrimination, mental-health challenges, or social stigma.

We offer confidential peer support groups, referrals to counselling and legal aid, and advocacy partnerships that raise awareness of LGBTQIA+ rights. Our goal is to foster dignity, build community, and champion equality.

Listening Hearts

Listening Hearts was founded to respond to the urgent needs in South African communities. South Africa faces many challenges: domestic abuse of women and children, ostracism of LGBTQIA+ people, coping with serious illness, and the hardships of unemployment and hunger.

Through workshops, support groups, feeding schemes, and advocacy, we help alleviate the distress experienced by these groups. Based in Johannesburg, our programs serve people in the greater Johannesburg area, focusing on respect and inclusivity.
